Before you decide

Egg donation is a medical process. Eligibility, screening and legal rules vary by clinic and country. This article is general education and does not replace personalised advice from your fertility clinic.

Why clinics ask you to bring someone

Egg retrieval is usually performed with sedation or anaesthesia. That means you normally cannot drive yourself home and may feel sleepy, uncomfortable or less steady for several hours afterward.

Safe transport home

Your support person should be able to accompany you after discharge and help you get home safely. A taxi or ride-hailing service may not be accepted as a substitute for a responsible adult, depending on the clinic.

Help during the first few hours

You may have cramps, bloating, nausea or tiredness. Having someone nearby means you do not have to cook, travel alone or manage everything immediately after the procedure.

Emotional support matters too

Donors can feel relieved, proud, emotional, flat or simply tired after retrieval. A trusted person who understands why you chose to donate can make the experience less isolating.

Choose someone reliable

Your support person should understand the date may shift slightly depending on follicle development. They should also know the clinic’s contact details and the warning signs you have been told to look out for.

Know when support is not enough

Severe or worsening abdominal pain, shortness of breath, fainting, heavy bleeding, persistent vomiting or markedly reduced urine output require medical advice rather than home reassurance.

Oocyt perspective

Your support person is there for you, not for the recipient or the clinic. Choose someone who will respect your privacy, help you rest and support whatever emotions come up after donation.
