Before you decide Egg donation is a medical process. Eligibility, screening and legal rules vary by clinic and country. This article is general education and does not replace personalised advice from your fertility clinic. |
The quick answer
A suitable egg donor needs more than healthy test results. Clinics also rely on donors to communicate clearly, attend appointments, follow medication instructions and be honest about their medical and family history. The process works best when you understand what is expected and feel comfortable asking questions.
1. You can commit to the process.
Egg donation includes screening, scans, blood tests, medication, monitoring appointments and egg collection. Timings can change as your ovaries respond to treatment, so reliability matters. If work, travel or family commitments make attendance difficult, it may be better to wait until you have enough flexibility.
2. You communicate well.
Your donor coordinator and fertility team may need to contact you about appointments, medication changes or test results. You do not need to be available every minute of the day, but you should be able to respond within a reasonable time and let the team know if something changes.
3. You are honest about your health.
Your medical history, medication use, lifestyle and family history help the clinic assess whether donation is safe for you and suitable for the recipient. Information that seems unimportant can sometimes change the screening plan, so transparency protects everyone involved.
4. You can follow medical instructions.
Stimulation injections need to be taken at the correct dose and time. Monitoring appointments also help the team decide whether medication needs to change. If you are unsure about an instruction, ask rather than guessing.
5. You are emotionally ready.
Donation can feel meaningful, exciting, strange or emotionally complicated. There is no single “correct” way to feel. What matters is that the decision is yours, you understand the implications and you have space to think about how you may feel before and after donation.
Oocyt perspective
We support altruistic, informed donation. A good donor is not someone who says yes to everything. A good donor understands the process, asks questions, feels able to say no when something does not feel right, and makes a decision without pressure.
Before you apply
Ask yourself whether you can attend appointments, take medication as instructed, share accurate medical information and arrange support for egg collection. If the answer is yes, the next step is screening to determine whether donation is medically suitable for you.
